چکیده

Direct numerical simulations of sea surface scattering are used to evaluate the accuracy of a recently proposed analytical model for ocean-generated Doppler spectra. Comparisons are performed for backscattering at incidence angles varying from near-nadir to low grazing at Land X-bands. Doppler centroids predicted by the model show, as expected, large discrepancies close to nadir and grazing directions. However, even for moderate incidence angles, a disagreement of 1025% is observed, especially at X-band. At present, the reason for this deviation is not well understood. The Doppler widths, however, show good agreement across the broad range of incidence angles.

Sea Surfaces Scattering by Multi-Order Small-Slope Approximation: a Monte-Carlo and Analytical Comparison

L-band electromagnetic scattering from two-dimensional random rough sea surfaces are calculated by first- and second-order Small-Slope Approximation (SSA1, 2) methods. Both analytical and numerical computations are utilized to calculate incoherent normalized radar cross-section (NRCS) in mono- and bi-static cases. For evaluating inverse Fourier transform, inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) i...

Studies on accuracy of numerical simulations of emission from rough ocean-like surfaces

Numerical simulation of passive microwave remote sensing of ocean surfaces has a strict requirement of accuracy. This is because the key output of the simulations is the difference of brightness temperature between a rough surface and a flat surface. Since the difference can be as small as 0.5 K, it is important to simulate the scattering and emission accurately. In this paper, we perform accur...

Numerical study on the along-track interferometric radar imaging mechanism of oceanic surface currents

The phase information in along-track interferometric synthetic aperture radar (along-track INSAR, ATI) images is a measure of the Doppler shift of the backscattered signal and thus of the line-of-sight velocity of the scatterers. It can be exploited for oceanic surface current measurements from aircraft or spacecraft. However, as already discussed in previous publications, the mean Doppler freq...

Numerical analysis of scattered waves from rough surfaces with and without an object

The effects of rough surface scattering on the detection and imaging of objects are important in many applications including the imaging of objects on or near ocean surfaces and the detection of objects buried under ground rough surfaces. This paper focuses on the following problems: (1) Scattering from wedge-like rough surfaces representing ocean surfaces with sharp crested waves. (2) Scatteri...

Applications of numerical models for rough surface scattering

This thesis provides new computational models for electromagnetic surface scattering which allow large one and two dimensional problems to be considered through the use of efficient numerical algorithms and parallel computing techniques. This is in contrast with previous numerical studies that have been limited to relatively small surfaces rough in one dimension only. The new numerically exact ...
